Course Description

This is a week-long rock climbing and yoga course at world-renowned Smith Rock State Park near Terrebonne, Oregon. During the rock climbing section of this course students will receive individual instruction and test their skills against vertical cracks, steep faces and boulders. Whether students are new to yoga or already practice this course will be an opportunity to learn further skills and practice in a positive and supportive environment.

Students set up a basecamp in a campground near Smith Rock State Park among the multicolored cliffs and spires, in order to focus on building climbing skills and techniques, and to establish a comprehensive and safe climbing foundation. Students will learn about basic climbing equipment, ropes, carabineers, harnesses, knots, belaying and rappelling techniques, and most importantly, how to move across the rock face efficiently and effectively using hand and foot holds.

Personal feedback from instructors helps students progress toward their climbing goals.  Our staff to student ratio averages 1:3.  Students not only build strong climbing skills and get a great taste of Smith Rock, but also all that Outward Bound and our incredible staff have to offer! Students who advance in the basic skills have the opportunity to do a multi-pitch climb or a spectacular Tyrolean Traverse put the newly gained skills to the test.

Students do not need any previous experience. We will teach students the necessary skill sets for each activity.

Course Area

Smith Rock State Park, Oregon – Smith Rock is a world-renowned climbing destination that attracts climbers of every ability level. It is widely considered to be one of the top sport climbing areas in the country. Smith Rock is a uniquely beautiful area that commonly graces postcards and calendars. The Crooked River lazily winds its way through the canyon, cutting a path through the cliffs and spires. To the west, the snow-capped volcanoes of the Cascade Range rise on the horizon, above the flat checkerboard of irrigated plains. One of the most striking features is a prominent spire, Monkey Face. Given the dry and temperate climate, rock climbing is feasible most of the year.
